He points out that individuals who have skin in the game, i.e. the people who possess a personal stake in the outcomes of their actions – are much more likely to act virtuously. This is because they feel more accountable to themselves as well as the others around them. This stands completely in contrast to what Taleb terms "intellectuals yet idiots" who are experts and policymakers lacking in practical experience or personal exposure to the consequences of their decision making. By highlighting the need of personal accountability and integrity, the author challenges his readers to reevaluate and reconsider the significance of expertise and authority in the society.


    Taleb introduces the concept of ergodicity, which deals with decision-making over long periods. He argues that sustainable strategies must be robust over time and that one should focus on avoiding ruin rather than maximising gains.
